We always find it hard to define La Variété, perhaps because we have never experienced it as a company, but rather as what we, Ricard and Raquel, are. And we all know how difficult it can be to talk about oneself!
Nine years have passed, and we continue to view La Variété as an extension of ourselves, a project with its own life, that we will always love, even when the energy it demands is sometimes enormous.
To define La Variété, the first thing that springs to mind, is that we love what we do. Its creative process, which is always on the go, converting subtle ideas into objects that can be useful, yet are neutral and free from any specific decorative aesthetic or concept. We like to say that we create, rather than incent or design, for in the most part, inspiration catches us on the roads of Chiang Mai, discovering artisanal workshops where we can process our ideas. And so it happens, that sometimes (or actually most of the time) riding our motorbike under the toasty tropical sun, or drenched by the incessant rains, we accidentally stumble on a small bamboo workshop, filled to the brim with marvellous objects which shine for their delicateness. And there an idea is born, and we think to ask the artisan if that chicken cage could be made in other sizes, and right there, at his little table, or even sitting on the ground, we take out pen and paper, to shape our next lamp.
Today it illuminates our new shop in Barcelona, and we observe it, recalling the process of its creation with happiness and even greater satisfaction when a customer takes it home with them.
That is how everything at La Variété is born, from a connection to a wonderful country, its people, their art in life and work, and a culture that allows us to be free to observe, improvise and grow. Together with them, the families, the local workshops, cutting wooden branches, sanding, painting, and sewing samples.
We weave a red thread between two cultures, a mixture of our own creations that consist in extracting the simple, the essence of what nature itself offers us, or by searching for a different use of, or sense to, the objects created thanks to age-old craftsmanship, and which we turn into completely different things. Our work is geared toward achieving a unique product that is simple, with its own personality, and is all done on a small scale, by hand, so that, along the way, we don’t loose the satisfaction of seeing that each product has its own soul.
